Jan Cowles-Obit by his wife Tina

After a year long and bravely-fought battle with lung cancer, Jan Cowles departed into the loving arms of Jesus on September 15, 2012 from the loving arms of his wife at their home in Lakewood, Colorado.

He was born on April 13, 1955 in Manchester, Iowa and grew up in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. After graduating from Northwestern University, he attended Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and earned two Master’s Degrees; one from Colorado Christian University in Biblical Counseling and one from Denver Seminary in Old Testament.

Jan loved to study the Word of God and his home library numbers in the thousands. He was a pastor for several churches in Wisconsin, South Dakota and Colorado. He was also a professor at Rocky Mountain Bible Institute and Headwaters Bible Institute.

As an accomplished guitarist he played in several bands and duets over the years. He and his wife loved to hike in the quiet places of Colorado, Wisconsin and Italy. They went on missions trips together to Thailand and Kenya. He went to Cuba, Greece, Turkey, Israel and spent a summer with the Choco Indians in Panama.

More than anything he was loved by everyone he met. He was a patient, kind and gentle man who always saw and brought out the best in everyone. Many lives were changed forever through his tender care. He is greatly missed by many.

He is survived by his wife Tina and daughter Kalia; his parents, Dey and Vernette Cowles of Wisconsin; his brothers: Rick (Karna) Cowles of Wisconsin and David (Pat) Cowles of Colorado; his sisters: Debra (Steve) Gill of California and Christine (Tom) Newcomer of Texas. He also has several nieces and nephews.

Services were held at Bear Vally Church, Lakewood Colorado.  There will be a memorial service on October 27th at 2:00 pm at the For those  in the Sheboygan area:  There will be another memorial service in Sheboygan for Jan on Saturday October 27th at 2:00 pm at

All Gathering Sept 11th !

Save the date!

Sunday, September 11 will be our next all-gathering. We will meet in Denver’s Washington Park to celebrate a picnic meal, games and play, engaging those around us, and concluding with a time of worship and prayer.

Folks from around the city have been meeting the past few months, waiting upon the Lord and listening to Him regarding this event. Three words summarize what we have been hearing from the Lord: Preparation, Equipping, and Celebration.

Preparation – we desire to see the Lord move among us as we gather to encourage one another, engage outsiders, and strive to bring honor and glory to our Lord as we humbly demonstrate to manifest the reality of His kingdom. In preparation for our next all-gathering, we invite you to join with us in fasting on Saturday, September 10. We will break our fast together on Sunday.

Equipping – the purpose of our fast is to prepare our hearts for what our Lord desires to accomplish among us and through us on Sunday the 11th. We encourage all the fellowships to spend time listening and praying as a means of equipping – asking the Lord “how shall we prepare for our gathering?” and “What do you want us to know about your equipping – how shall we prepare?”

Celebration – Sunday, 09/11 (11:00 AM – 4:00 PM)

10:30 – 11:00 AM Set up
We will be setting up tables and our picnic in the southeast corner of Washington Park (about 1/3 mile east of the intersection of I-25 and Louisiana Avenue). We will park at the South High School parking lot and meet near Franklin Street and Louisiana Avenue, just north of the South High parking lot.

11:00 AM – 12:00 PM Fellowship
We will have an open time of sharing where everyone will have the opportunity to share what our Lord spoke during our time of fasting. We will also corporately worship through song.

12:00 – 12:30 PM Celebration!

We will join in a picnic and break our fast together. After our picnic we will have a time of fun – playing games, Frisbee, walking in the park, engaging others in conversation – this is a time to have fun playing together. As we play we will be open to the Lord’s leading about engaging others in the park and inviting them to join us.

2:30 – 4:00 PM Prayer and Worship
We will gather again for a time of corporate prayer and worship. This will be an open ministry time, and we encourage you to be open to inviting others you may have encountered during the day – as the Lord leads. We will humbly and openly share, pray, and worship, in this public setting.

This e-mail is just a “Save the Date” announcement. Tim Morris will be sending a flyer and poster in the near future, with additional details and driving directions. Look for this announcement.

Have a blessed day!

  • Learn the difference between Greek and Hebrew thinking
  • Find out what God thinks of us (this alone could turn our world up side down)
  • Read Genesis in the context of ancient cultures and stories.
  • Understand the best translations (and options) of the original language
Hear what others through the centuries have said as they have read/listened to Genesis.
  • Listen to what God is saying to and through each other.

Where we will meet? Green Mountain in  Lakewood (Cowles’ household)
When? Wednesday nights 6:45 – 9:00, April 20th – May 25th
